Five Books to Read this February (and a book for kids)

At Lansing Mom there is nothing we love more than a good book. Books bring people together, books are an escape from reality, books can help us learn and grow, basically there’s nothing a good book can’t do. Which is why we’re so excited to bring you a list of books to read each month. No matter what your chosen genre is we’ve got you covered! Read on for five books to read this February.

Lansing Mom is here to share our tried and true favorites. This post does contain affiliate links that help support our small business but every product is something we love!

Book One: From Our Read With Us Series, The Vanishing Half, Historical Fiction

Check out The Vanishing Half

Each month we’ll be choosing one book for the Lansing Mom Community that we can all read together. Our pick this month is The Vanishing Half, written by Brit Bennett. A book about identical twins; one choosing to live their life in a southern black community, the other choosing to live across the country while she, “secretly passes for white.”

We are so excited to dive into this book this month and explore, “race, gender, and identity.” We hope you’ll read with us.

Book Two: The Housemaid, Thriller

Check out The Housemaid

If thriller is your genre, this one is on our TBR list this month! A housemaid for a wealthy family finds things just a little bit strange about the wife of the family, Nina. When she tries on a dress of Nina’s, she finds herself locked in her attic bedroom with no way out. But she has a secret she’s keeping too.

We’ve heard that if you like Verity, you’re going to like this one too!

Book Three: Onyx Storm, Fantasy

Check out Onyx Storm or book one of the series, Fourth Wing

We have to list Onyx Storm under Fantasy this month because of the insane hype surrounding it. Since we don’t want to give away anything in books one and two if you haven’t read them, here’s a brief intro of the series. Violet Sorrengail is raised in a world with a mother who is a leading general and a father who tries to install all the knowledge he can upon her. Her path takes a turn when she finds herself not following the footsteps she thought she was going to with the life of a scribe. She is thrust into the world of dragons, with enemies at every turn, and is forced to survive. Violet must either bond a dragon or die trying. With an underlying steamy love and so many secrets, this one has to be on your fantasy reading list.

Book Four: Just for the Summer, Romance

Check out Just for the Summer

The month of love certainly deserves a romance book and we LOVE Abby Jimenez. This book is based on moving on, misfortune, and the loss of love. An unfortunate curse brings main characters Justin and Emma together as they try to make the best of their loss of love. It’s Rom-Com cute and will leave you smiling!

Book Five: Unreasonable Hospitality, Educational/Self Improvement

Check out Unreasonable Hospitality

Unreasonable Hospitality is the book by Will Guidara that’s taken the business world by storm. If you’re in the business world, this book can truly transform the way you think about your own business. It focuses on how hospitality can make a change for all of us and the ways we interact with our teams, our clients, and anyone who comes into contact with our business.

Book Six: The Pink Umbrella, For the Kids

Check out The Pink Umbrella

My kids are currently OBSESSED with The Pink Umbrella. This adorable story follows Adele, a shop owner, who conquers her disdain for rainy days. It’s a gorgeous book that teaches us about mindset and attitude even on the rainy days.

We’re so excited to bring this brand new series to you with new books each month, kicking it off with five books to read this February! Don’t forget you can always check out books from the library, or check out local stores like Hooked Lansing and Socialight Society to see if they carry these books!
