Why Life Insurance is Important for Moms

Life insurance may be a topic that we prefer to avoid because of the unfortunate circumstances that surround it. Life insurance can make a difference in setting our families up to move through the things that may come. While we acknowledge that this may be an extremely difficult topic for some, our goal at Lansing Mom is always to provide resources for Moms in every stage of life. We are partnering with Grace Braatz-Opper of Modern Woodmen of America to bring you information on life insurance so you can make informed decisions for your family and learn why life insurance is important for moms.

When I lost my Dad fifteen years ago, I wasn’t expecting it. He had been sick for a long time, but I think because he had been so sick, I just treated it as our normal. I never thought he would be gone, until he was. While I wasn’t a child when my Dad passed, I wasn’t really an adult either. Caught somewhere in between, and a little lost honestly. I’m not sure what I expected. A guide book on how to handle the loss of a parent would have been nice. My dad didn’t have much set up in preparation for end of life, even though he was sick, his death was unexpected. Looking back now I didn’t know that life insurance could have been helpful. I didn’t know how important it would be once my husband and I had kids of our own. Now as a Mom I’m taking control of our lives and setting my kids up for success.

Some Common Misconceptions About Life Insurance

You can be too young to need life insurance

This is false! There is no “right” age to purchase life insurance and purchasing when you are younger can help create a safety net for your loved ones should something happen.

Life Insurance isn’t needed if you’re healthy

Life insurance can actually be less expensive the healthier you are! Purchasing it when you are healthy can be beneficial for many reasons should something happen. Life insurance can become more expensive when health problems arise.

If you have life insurance through your workplace you don’t need more

While your employer may provide life insurance it may not be enough to ensure that your family is financially secure. Meeting with Grace can help you determine if your current coverage is enough for your loved ones.

Life insurance is super expensive

On average life insurance costs for a healthy individual are less expensive than many people think. Meeting with Grace will help you determine the cost of life insurance for you!

You should invest your money other places instead of life insurance

While there are benefits to investments, view life insurance and investments as two tools to set your family up for financial success. Grace can walk you through what the best fit will be for your family.

Only the person who makes the most money needs life insurance

According to Forbes, Stay-At-Home Parents, “do about $4,500 of unpaid labor per month.” While your Stay-At-Home Parent isn’t earning that income, that’s what it’s estimated it would cost to replace them. If you are a two caretaker, one income household there is value in both partners having life insurance.

There are so many life insurance options, it’s confusing

While there are lots of different options for life insurance it’s to ensure that you have a policy that fits your lifestyle and financial goals. Setting up a meeting with Grace will ensure you can find the policy that’s right for you.

The Term Coverage is limiting and living through it gets you nothing

While term life insurance is most affordable because it expires after the term finishes, there are options for a return upon expiration of the policy.

It is only useful if you die

There can be payouts and benefits to life insurance while you are living, more than just a payout after death. In order to fully understand this option, a meeting with Grace will provide clarity on what can be provided.

Single people don’t need life insurance.

Even if you are single life insurance can be beneficial. Your family will be left with the expenses after death and life insurance could help cover costs for your loved ones.

One thing that we all know too well is that life is short. Life Insurance can be affordable and set your family up for financial security should something happen to you. If you’re ready to take the next step with life insurance for yourself, your loved ones, your peace of mind, and your kids, contact Grace Braatz-Opper at Modern Woodmen of America.
