Skincare routines are not one-size-fits-all but they should be easy to follow and personalized to your skincare needs. It can be tricky to figure out exactly what you need, but keeping it simple is a great way to start. Consider your skin type, sensitivities, and what you’re willing to spend when selecting some new products to try. I’m sharing some of my favorite products that I use in my daily skincare routine that I hope you’ll love.
At Lansing Mom we always recommend our tried and true favorites, while these are some of our favorite items in our home, this post does contain affiliate links!
Step 1: Cleanse (AM, PM)
Cleansing your skin removes any dirt, oil, or other buildup like makeup and gives you a clean slate for your skincare routine. For my sensitive and acne-prone skin, CeraVe makes my favorite face wash that doesn’t cost a ton. I really enjoy the foaming one, but I use the hydrating one a lot more during the colder months.
Step 2: Toner (PM)
Using a toner removes any leftover residue and also helps balance your skin’s pH and prevent breakouts. Thayer’s Rose Petal Toner is a tried and true one for me, personally. I don’t like to spend too much on my skincare and I’ve found this one to be gentle yet effective.
Step 3: Serum (PM)
For me this step is an optional one. If you’re worried about specific issues with your skin, there are different serums that can be beneficial. A quick Google search can give you a range of options for anything from wrinkle reduction to skin brightening. The Strategist has a nice list of serums ranging in price and skin type here. I just ordered this retinol serum from CeraVe so fingers crossed it’s a good one!
Step 4: Moisturize + Eye Cream (AM, PM)
Keeping your skin hydrated locks in the previous steps of your skincare routine. I love a good combination product and this SPF moisturizer from Aveeno is what I go for every morning. In the evening I usually use CeraVe Daily Moisturizer.
I haven’t tried La Roche-Posay personally but I do hear about it a lot on the internet and am interested in trying it out. This moisturizer has tons of good reviews on Amazon which is always a good sign.
If you’re wanting to target things like dark circles or under eye wrinkles, you can also add an eye cream to your routine. The Clinique All About Eyes has vitamin C and is super hydrating too.
Step 5: Sunscreen (AM)
SPF is probably the most important step of any skincare routine, even in the wintertime. Your skin cannot look its best unless you protect it from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Sun Bum is my favorite brand for sunscreen products. I use their face SPF 50 during the summertime and have never had a problem even with my sensitive skin. I also love their kids’ products and use this one religiously on my little ones.
Add A Little Extra
Every once in a while, I like to throw in an exfoliant but only a few times a month or my skin gets too irritated. I usually like to use the Acure Brightening Facial Scrub in the shower, since it can be messy. You can exfoliate after cleansing your face.
For something fun and relaxing, TONYMOLY sheet masks are my all time favorite.
I also struggle with dry feet, especially in the wintertime, so I usually slap on some foot cream and socks right after I get out of the shower. This one from L’OCCITANE is a holy grail product for me. Seriously, it’s a miracle worker.
One tip for finding a skin care product that works for you is using your circle of friends or family members to find out what they use. I love asking friends for recommendations and trying out new products. Try asking your bestie or sister what they like to use and see if you can find your next skincare obsession!
