How did you come up with the idea of your business Cornerstone Legal PLLC, and how did you start?
I had worked as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal for almost 13 years and really wanted to continue working with clients and providing those same services. After graduating law school and passing the Bar Exam, I decided the best way to guarantee high-quality services at affordable rates was to start my own firm. So I built my firm from the ground up!
Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?
I would not have tried to be as frugal with some things because I’ve spent money rebranding myself already.
What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given?
Know your worth! Don’t let anyone make you feel like you should question your fees.
Have you faced adversity in business due to being a woman? How did you navigate that?
Somewhat. My field is heavily male-dominated, but I haven’t really faced any major obstacles. There have been a couple of prospective clients who were a little old school and ultimately they weren’t the right fit. But overall, I have been blessed that I haven’t faced much adversity.
How do you persevere in challenging times?
I have an amazing support staff as well as a tight-knit group of fellow business owners who I connect with regularly.
What impact do you want Cornerstone Legal to have?
I want to leave a legacy of support for other small business owners in the community and educate members of my communities to help demystify and overcome false stereotypes about estate planning.
What are the pros and cons of being a woman business owner in 2024?
Pro: my boys get to watch me build and run a business. Con: there are still unrealistic standards about mom’s in the workplace.
What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?
Networking (and networking well and productively) is a huge element of growing a business.
What do you do for personal and professional development?
I work toward and obtain continuing education credits through ICLE, I attend various seminars and other educational events, I work with a business coach on a monthly basis, I attend chamber events, and I regularly attend various networking groups and events.
