Introducing Lexie Starnes… an East Lansing Mom

Hi everyone! My name is Lexie and I am a mother of two curiously creative girls, a wife, book lover, and a speech-language pathologist. I am a Michigan native and a proud Michigan State Alumni times two. I have been rooted in the East Lansing Area for the past 15+ years and love being a Lansing mom.

Motherhood

I have always been a maternal soul and knew I wanted children. In 2019, my husband, Joe, and I welcomed our first daughter into the world and she is a ray of sunshine. Once a new mom, I quickly discovered that balancing the roles of full-time speech-language pathologist and mother was more challenging than expected. In 2020, I made the bittersweet decision to take a leave of absence from my full-time job. Shortly into 2021, we welcomed our second daughter, Claire, into our lives and she has brought our family so much joy. She is full of energy, spunk, and compliments her beloved older sister.

I am thankful for this time at home with my daughters during these younger, tender years. It is a dream come true for me. My daughters and I love spending our days crafting, being outside, reading, and making messes. Typically, you can walk into our home and find a play room full of “creations.” This may include paint, glue, and sensory bin fillers scattered across the floor. But if you look closely, you can see fluttering imaginations and new learning taking place. I’m grateful to be its witness.

Professional Life

I received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Michigan State University and have been a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist for the past eight years. I have worked with both adults and children in a variety of settings. However, the heart of my career has been working with children in the public schools. I have had the pleasure of working locally in the greater Lansing area for the majority of my career. Most recently, I was employed at Okemos Public School District working with early elementary aged children. During the COVID pandemic, I had the opportunity to open my own private practice for a short period of time, and provided speech-language services to children in the Greater Lansing area. I truly love my profession and consider myself lucky to have found it.

My Creative Platform

One of my greatest passions is creating hands-on learning activities for children: the messier the better! As a school based SLP, I spent hours creating meaningful, theme based activities that were engaging and fun for my students. Now as a mother, I find myself creating similar learning experiences at home. Throughout the pandemic, I felt an urge to share simple language based activities, tips and tricks, and milestone information with parents, caregivers, friends, and family. I decided to start blogging through Instagram and the rest is history. I enjoy creating meaningful activities for others and sharing about speech-language development too.

Advocating for Literacy

I have always had an interest in books and how literacy impacts a child’s speech-language development. As a new mom and SLP, I had a thriving book collection but was always seeking more. On maternity leave, while building a library for my daughter’s nursery, a friend introduced me to PaperPie books. I was so impressed with the quality and mission of the company that I decided to become a brand partner and have never left. I truly enjoy sharing the gift of literacy and learning about new pieces of literature along the way. We are always looking forward to our next box of books to gift to children in the community!

Hobbies

My family and I love to be outside rain or shine. My husband and I enjoy a quiet ski trip in the winter and being by the lake in the summer. In the spring or fall, you are sure to find us on our bikes, exploring one of the many trails in the greater Lansing area. I also enjoy carving out time for exercise and will try any cardio or strength fitness class at least once. When time allows it, you can find me curled up with a good mystery novel and a cup of coffee, usually with a toddler at my toes.
