Getting Outside this Winter

Getting outside during the winter months can be a challenge. However, fresh air and physical activity are always good for the soul, despite the snow and frigid temps! Check out one or all of these “must do” activities in the greater Lansing area to help you get outside this winter.

Tubing at Hawk Island

Tubing is one of my family’s absolute favorite ways to get outside in the winter. If you haven’t been tubing at Hawk Island Park put it on your Winter Bucket list! It is a must-do activity once the snow arrives here in the greater Lansing area. Whether the temperatures are mild or bitter cold, Hawk Island’s adventurous tubing hill is sure to help you get outside and keep your mind off the cold. Not to mention, keep your adrenaline rushing!

Due to limited capacity, you must purchase tickets ahead of time on line and they go fast! Make sure you snag your tickets this winter and make it a family affair. You can purchase your tickets here: Hawk Island Tubing Tickets.

Ice Skating Fun

Ice skating is such a fun way to get outside and move your body all while enjoying the magic of winter and the holiday season. I love and appreciate that there are indoor and outdoor options in the Lansing area for this activity. If you are looking to try ice skating in an indoor location, check out the East Lansing Ice Cube’s website and schedule information here: East Lansing Ice Cube. They have a wonderful “Public Skate” option on Sundays.

If you hoping to get outside and ice skate this winter be sure to check out the artificial ice skating rink located at the Marketplace on the Green in Meridian Township. Ice skates are provided from a lending shed right next to the ice rink. This is a fantastically fun experience for kids of all ages and a must do on the winter activities check list!

Cross Country Skiing/Snow Shoeing

Cross country skiing and snow shoeing are two sports that will help you get outside and enjoy the beauty of winter this season. If you are itching to cross country ski or snow shoe, Burchfield Park is a great option. Burchfield Park is Ingham County’s largest park spanning 540 acres of scenic woods and trails. It offers cross country ski and snow shoe rentals and has a winter snack bar and cozy warming lodge. Another great park option is Lake Lansing Park North which offers both cross country ski and snowshoe rentals.

Howell Nature Center

Howell Nature Center is a great way to get outside this winter. Not only is it a great place to enjoy nature but also a great place to learn about Michigan wildlife. During winter, the woodlands and wetlands becomes blanketed in white and a quiet place to stroll. There is much to see and do at the Howell Nature Center including some special Winter events. Check them out here: Howell Nature Center Events.
