Get to Know Melissa – a Laingsburg Mom

Hi Lansing Moms!  I’m Melissa, a City Girl turned Country Girl!

I was born and raised in Ohio but made my way to Michigan for college. I graduated from Spring Arbor University with an Elementary Education Degree. After graduating college, I moved to the East Coast to be a live-in, full time nanny. I nannied for families in Connecticut and New York City for seven years before moving to North Carolina and marrying my husband. We moved back to Michigan in 2017 and have been living in Laingsburg since.

5 Fun Facts About Me:

  1.  My husband and I were married in a jail. (We were not in jail, just were married there.)
  2.  I enjoy cooking and baking. My favorite recipes are from the Pioneer Woman. I just wish the dishes did themselves.
  3.  I love reality TV. Bravo and the Real Housewives are my favorite.
  4. Both of my boys share the same birthday, 2 years apart.
  5. I love Dr. Pepper, specifically, McDonald’s Dr. Pepper.

Family

My husband Michael and I met in college but never dated back then. We stayed friends for many years and one spring he decided to visit me while I was living in New York City. After that trip, I knew he was “the one.” We dated long-distance for a year before we got engaged. A month later, I moved to North Carolina and we were married the following week. We didn’t have a traditional wedding, but it was just right for us. After living in North Carolina for a year, we moved to Michigan. We decided we were ready to start thinking about having kids, so we wanted to be closer to family. Now, we live within eight miles of all of Michael’s family.

Motherhood

My entire life, all I wanted was to be a mom. I nannied for many children and I thought I knew what it was like to be a mom. Boy, was I wrong! It took us three years, lots of negative pregnancy tests, three pregnancy losses, some fertility treatments, and many tears before Hudson was born. We felt so lucky to finally have the baby we dreamed about for all those years. We were told Hudson was a true miracle and that they didn’t think we would be able to have any more babies, but somehow, we got pregnant with Henry.

Henry has truly completed our family. I love watching Henry and Hudson become friends.  They are both crazy! They love getting dirty, riding their bikes, and trying to get hurt. Having struggled to get pregnant and with pregnancy loss has really shaped me as a mother. There were times when I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to be someone’s mom. While being a mom is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, “Mom” is my favorite title and I’m so glad I get to be Hudson and Henry’s mom.

I’ve learned so much from other moms and I’m so excited to join the Lansing Mom Community and share the highs and lows of motherhood!
