What You Need to Know About Michigan Zoos Re-Opening

Things are starting to return to a new normal and it is so exciting! While maybe you can’t wait to revisit some of your favorite spots, there are are some new protocols that need to be followed. Our favorite Michigan zoos are taking extra measures to keep their animals, staff, and you safe. All of the details are here on what each zoo is requiring and how you can enjoy a favorite summer spot safely!

Potter Park Zoo | Lansing

How To Enter | Potter Park Zoo has timed entry tickets and you can reserve your time slot ahead of time online. Members are free but need to register for a time slot. 

What To Know | Hand sanitizing stations are set up throughout the zoo. Signs and paw prints are up to help you social distance. You cannot bring in outside food and drink, except for refillable water bottles.

Masks | Masks must be worn when within six feet of others. Disposable masks are available for purchase. 

What’s Open | Indoor areas will not be open at this time. The Savanna Grill is open along with other kiosks. 

Detroit Zoo | Royal Oak

How To Enter | The Detroit Zoo has timed entry tickets and you can reserve your time slot ahead of time online. Members are free but need to register for a time slot.

What To Know | The zoo will email you a map (no paper maps at this time) along with safety requirements. You must enter through the main entrance. Hand sanitizing stations are available throughout the zoo.

Masks | Masks must be worn. They will be available for purchase if you need. 

What’s Open | All outdoor areas are open. The playground will not be open. Buddy’s Pizza is open and kiosks are available for food. Restrooms are open for use with a capacity. Some indoor exhibits are open and capacities are limited. 

John Ball Zoo | Grand Rapids

How To Enter | John Ball Zoo has timed entry tickets and you can reserve your time slot ahead of time online or by phone. Members are free but need to register for a time slot.

What To Know | Additional hand washing stations are available throughout the zoo. They are encouraging cashless transactions. No re-admittance at this time. If you are late for your time slot you cannot enter.

Face Masks | Masks are encouraged and staff will be wearing masks. Masks are available for purchase.

What’s Open | Some spaces may be closed such as outdoor play areas and indoor spaces.

Saginaw Children’s Zoo | Saginaw

How To Enter | Saginaw Children’s Zoo has timed entry tickets and you can reserve your time slot ahead of time online. Members are free but need to register for a time slot.

Masks | Masks are encouraged and are available for purchase in the kiosks.

What To Know | Additional hand washing and sanitizing stations are open. The Cafe is open.

What’s Open | Carousel is open. The Playground, Fossil Find, Underwater Viewing Cave, Conductor’s Tower Playscape, Train Depot, Aviary, Goat Yard, and Australian Walkabout will not be open at this time. The Gift Shop is closed.

Binder Park Zoo | Calhoun County

How To Enter | Purchase tickets as normal.

Masks | Masks are recommended.

What To Know | Practice social distancing. Utilize hand sanitizing and hand washing stations. No outside food or drink. 

What’s Open | No goat feeding, duck feeding, or face painting. Zookeeper Tails, Animal Encounters, and Guided Tours are not available. Giraffe feeding is available but you must wear masks and sanitize hands. The Adventure Station will not be open. Beulah’s Restaurant is open for grab and go meals and snacks. Kalahari Kitchen is open. Safari Gift Shop and Zawadi Traders are open. The Train and carousel will not be open.
