Ways Moms Can Get Creative in Lansing

Somewhere between fourth grade art class and having our first baby, many of us moms seem to lose our knack for spontaneous creativity. Maybe we never felt very creative in the first place, especially if art forms like drawing or painting didn’t come naturally. And when sleep deprivation is in the mix, who has the time or energy for creative work? We nurture our children’s creativity, proudly hanging their scribbles on the fridge or office wall. No one questions whether a preschooler’s stick figure family was a waste of time because it wasn’t perfect! It is good to create something new and beautiful for no other reason than that – whether you’re five, the mother of a five-year-old, or a mother of five!

If letting your creative juices flow feels like self-care, do it. If being handed a blank canvas intimidates you, consider other forms of creative expression that do bring joy. And if you’re reading this and thinking, But I’m really not creative,” I challenge you to reconsider. I’m sharing ways to get creative in Lansing that are all for moms, whether you go solo, grab a friend, or have a date night, these are sure to not disappoint.

I’m Liz, stay-at-home mom to four kids (preschool age to middle school), freelance writer, and a Lansing resident since 2017. I'm a mediocre homemaker, mildly successful gardener, and not great at doing voices during bedtime stories. When not at home, I'm probably shuttling kids in the van, getting alone time at a coffeeshop or used bookstore, or volunteering at church, school, or St. Vincent's Refugee Services.
