Growing up, snow days were always magical to me. Watching the snow fall as you get ready for bed the night before. Hoping you’ll get that automated phone message in the morning or see your school’s name on the local news’ scrolling list. My kids aren’t in school yet, but I still want them to feel that same sense of wonder on a snowy day. Here are all the things I have on my snow day bucket list that you might enjoy too.
Sledding
This is a given. Keep in mind your favorite local spots close to your house. We’re lucky to have a decent-sized hill across the street. You don’t want to be driving far if the roads aren’t cleared yet. If you aren’t sure where the closest sledding hill is, check out our list of Sledding Hills In + Around Lansing.
Go Play in the Snow
Let your kids play in the snow in the way that’s most fun for them that are appropriate for their age. Building a snowman is always a classic snow day activity. You can find lots of easy snowman kits online or use things from the house and yard. If the snow is good for packing, challenge yourself to build a snow fort. You can also get molds for easy snowballs if you want to be fancy.
Breakfast and Hot Cocoa
We’re in Dewitt, so our favorite local places include Tin Cup Café & Creamery (the best drinks for kids) and Sweeti-licious (amazing quiche and other baked goods). Keep a mental list of places near you and double-check they are open during the snow day before heading out. If the roads are too snowy, stay in and create your own cafe at home with pancakes and hot cocoa.
PJs and a Cozy Movie
You obviously don’t have to wait for a snow day to do this but something about being snowed in makes it feel different. Some cozy family favorites for us: Disney’s Wish, My Neighbor Totoro, Mary Poppins, and How to Train Your Dragon.
Picnic Dinner in the Living Room
Lay out some beach towels on your living room floor and make a picnic inside! We usually opt for ham and turkey sandwiches with crackers and fruit. Feel free to offer whatever (non-messy) foods your kids enjoy. I think of it as Girl Dinner but for your kids.
Warm Up and Wind Down with a Fun Bath
Think bubbles, bath bombs, bath colors, special toys, etc. If your kids are a little older and don’t take baths you can still make it fun. Special shower steamers or other self-care products (face masks, nice lotion, etc.) after the shower are a good way to wind down from a day of playing in the snow.
