Introducing Brandie Yates…a Holt Mom

Hi! I’m Brandie, a Holt Mom, and I can’t wait to connect with you!

My Love For Writing

At a young age, I always loved telling stories. I am a performer at heart, but writing has always been my passion. From my “When I Grow Up” speech in fourth grade (I wanted to be a zoologist back then), to becoming feature editor of my high school newspaper, I feel as if I am a born storyteller. When I entered Michigan State University, I knew journalism was my calling. Soon after entering college, I fell in love with television broadcasting.

Career

Growing up in the small town of Ithaca, Michigan, I was always determined to move out of state after graduation. My goal was to become the next anchor for “Good Morning America,” no matter what time I had to wake up. (Note: this girl is not a morning person, but she is a coffee drinker.) Most of my college career was spent working towards this dream. My love of the Lansing area grew as I started my television internship, reporting for a small government access channel, HOMTV, in Meridian Township. I have continued my career at the place I got my start and I am thrilled to be the newest Communications Manager for Meridian Township. In my current position, I oversee all print and digital communications for the township as well as manage operations of the station, the HOMTV Internship, and all programming on the HOMTV channel as Executive Producer.

Marriage

After living in the Lansing area, I started to picture myself living here long-term and starting a family. My husband and I have done just that and I can’t really see us anywhere else. We have lived here together for about 10 years. We are actually still in our starter home, many DIY home renovations later.

For many years we were content with our happy, but busy life with just us and our two fur-babies: the “Golden Boys,” Conan and Rocky. We had no idea how our first little bundle of joy was going to change our priorities and outlook on life.

Motherhood

Being a mom has filled the void in my life that I didn’t even know I had. Each milestone comes with its own set of happy surprises and challenges. For me, motherhood has been both special and stressful all at once. It is the most bizarre feeling– every moment is precious, even if it is on your most frustrating or “bad” days (trust me, we have all had them). Our daughter, Emberly, is now two and a half years old. She is our smart, beautiful, active, sweet, and sometimes sassy little toddler, who lights up our life in every way possible. Although I still love my career in communications and television, my focus has shifted to my family, or at least that is what I strive to remember and do every single day.

I can’t wait to share my past experiences, struggles, triumphs, and some helpful tips on this new adventure. I am so excited to be a contributing writer for Lansing Mom, to not only showcase what this great community has to offer, but to continue my love of storytelling and hopefully help some fellow moms along the way!
