Head to the Zoo this Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside—but that doesn’t mean we should stay inside all winter long! If you’re looking to get outdoors during the winter months, we recommend that you head to the zoo this winter!

Did you know the Potter Park Zoo is open every day except December 25th? That’s right! You can still get your animal fix in all winter long and enjoy some massive perks. Read on below to find out why you should head to the zoo this winter!

Pros of Heading to the Zoo in Winter

The top of our pros list is that the zoo is WAY LESS CROWDED in the winter. If you’re lucky, it might just feel like you have the place to yourself. Less crowds mean easier viewing and a little more room for your little ones to wander.

We know a lot of us have been to the zoo on a day when it’s so hot the animals barely even move. In the winter this is not the case! We’ve had some of our best animal viewing in the colder months. The animals aren’t so lethargic and you have the opportunity to catch them being extremely active.

What to Bring

If you’re thinking you’re going to head to the zoo this winter, we recommend that you check the weather for the day. If it’s going to be a cold one, dress like you’re going to play in the snow. Pack all the snow pants, gloves, and winter coats to make sure you can stay nice and warm. If your little ones are still stroller/wagon age, pack in some blankets to keep them warm. Bonus if you have a heated blanket! Don’t forget to hit the grocery store and bring hand warmers for gloves. We also recommend hand warmers in the boots if you’re prone to cold feet.

If you’re someone who really doesn’t like the cold, but your family is insistent on getting out, we recommend buying a heated vest or coat. We’re pretty cold a lot of the time and it is a great investment for the winter months.

Where to Warm Up

(Please note: some of these facilities are currently closed due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions. Please check with the zoo’s website for reopening information.)

Wolf Woods

Potter Park Zoo has a log cabin where you can temporarily step out of the cold to view their wolves. The cabin is outfitted with a huge window for viewing and has several artifacts to check out that will keep you in the warmth a little longer.

Bird and Reptile House

Step out of the cold and into this heated area to view dozens of birds and reptiles. A little hack we love, too, is to bring coloring supplies and have your kiddos practice drawing the animals they see. They’ll have fun and you can spend a little more time in the warmth.

Feline and Primate House

Looking to check out some big cats or monkeys? The beauty of Potter Park Zoo is that they can all be seen from inside! No need to worry about standing in the cold to try and catch a glimpse.

Things to Note

If you’re ready to head to the zoo this winter here’s a few things to note! Are you a resident of Ingham County? You could be admitted for free on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. as long as it is not a holiday! All other days, adults are $4.00 and children aged 3-12 are $3.00. The zoo is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.

Are you currently nursing or pumping? No need to do it out in the cold! Zoo staff will be happy to take you to one of their secure locations located around the zoo.

The zoo does not have any open dining options during the winter so be sure to pack a lunch or snacks for your visit.

So what are you waiting for? Pack up the family and head to Potter Park Zoo for the day! You won’t regret it! Looking for some more fun in Lansing? Take a winter hike on one of these local trails!
