Field Trip Locations and Programs for 2020

Maybe you’ve chosen to homeschool this year or maybe your school has gone virtual for the foreseeable future. Either way, staying at home or staying at a screen all day can be less than ideal for your kids’ learning. If you’re a hands-on kind of parent looking to add a little bit extra to this school year, or supplement entirely, consider one of these amazing Michigan spots for a field trip. You’ll add a little bit of hands-on experience to your education and it might provide a well-deserved break for everyone!

Field Trip Spots Local to Lansing

If you’re not looking to travel too far these field trip spots will be perfect for you to add to your school year curriculum. Due to COVID-19 please check with the facility before traveling for closures and/or social distancing and safety requirements. Some may only be offering virtual events at this time.

Bug House | Location: Offering Virtual Engagement only as of 8/20. Check the website for updates.

Ella Sharp Museum Hurst Planetarium | Location: Jackson. Offering both virtual and in-person options.

Impression 5 Science Center | Location: Lansing. Offering both virtual and in-person options.

Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden | Location: MSU. The gardens are open to visit

MSU Broad Art Museum | Location: MSU. The museum is scheduled to open September 1st with limited hours.

Michigan History Museum | Location: Lansing. The museum is currently closed as of 8/20, but is offering virtual options.

Michigan State Capitol Building | Location: Lansing. Currently open for tours with updated protocol.

Michigan Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame | Location: Lansing. Currently open for scheduled tours.

Minibeast Zooseum and Education Center | Location: Lansing.

Potter Park Zoo | Location: Lansing. Currently Open.

R. E. Olds Transportation Museum | Location: Lansing. Currently Open.

Steam Railroading Institute | Location: Owosso. Currently closed but working on an opening plan as of 8/20.

Ziibiwing Center | Location: Mt. Pleasant. Currently closed but working on an opening plan as of 8/20.

Homeschool Days and Programs

If you are looking for a more detailed field trip program for your student, these are great options for programs and days out based on learning. At this time, we highly recommend checking with the facility to see what is available and open before heading to visit, as some places may still be closed due to COVID-19.
